Eating Disorders - Causes, Symptoms and Recovery

Eating Disorders - A National Health Tragedy

Statistically, at least 1 in 3 Americans can be considered diet obsessive.

And why not?

We are constantly being bombarded with imagery of fantastic looking size zero supermodels wearing gazillion dollar perfume and diamonds. They're always fastened to the arm of some bad-boy-hottie driving a Rolls Silver Shadow parked outside of a five-star restaurant.

The message? If you look like me, you can have all of this.

The sad reality for an increasing number people, especially young women, is that our obsessive relationship with food is spiraling into a national health tragedy.

Anorexia Nervosa

Eating Order Statistics

  • 8 million people in the United States (90% of which are women) suffer from eating disorders
  • 3% of all young women and girls suffer from Anorexia Nervosa
  • Between 3 and 4% of all young women and girls suffer from Bulimia Nervosa
  • 1% of men suffer from eating disorders
  • Many more suffer from lessor forms of these conditions
  • Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychological disease.

Bulimia Nervosa

Types of Eating Disorders and Eating Disorder Symptoms

Anorexia Nervosa is characterized by starvation and an intense fear of gaining weight. The sufferer has an extremely distorted sense of their body image, and no matter how dangerously thin they become, they will continue to see themselves as too fat. Typically they will reach the point where intake of all kinds of foods is limited, and what they do eat is dispelled by self-induced vomiting or by taking laxatives.

Bulimia Nervosa is characterized by frequent (at least twice a week) episodes of out of control eating, called binges, where the sufferer consumes an amount of food that far exceeds the norm for the same period of time. The bulimic then controls potential weight gain through the use of vomiting, laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise. This is a particularly dangerous disorder because a bulimic's weight will usually only vary slightly from the normal range, and therefore appears normal.

Binge Eating Disorder is characterized by binge (out of control) eating. Unlike the bulimic, the binge eater does not attempt to mitigate the certain weight gain that results from the episode. Instead, they remain clinically obese.

Eating Disorder Causes and Treatments

Causes of Eating Disorders:

Eating disorders are the result of many factors. They include:

  • A lack of control in one's personal life
  • A need for social approval
  • Food addiction
  • Low self-esteem

Statistically, sufferers will tend to be white women from middle, or upper-middle class families where there has been a heavy emphasis placed on achievements and appearance.

They will often have other disorders:

  • 50% suffer from clinical depression
  • 25% suffer from alcoholism
  • Other statistically significant problems include other addictions like gambling and compulsive stealing.

Treatments for Eating Disorders:

There are over 50 dangerous, sometimes even deadly, diseases and conditions associated with eating disorders. For this reason, treatment almost always focuses initially on the threat to life. After that, the focus shifts to a therapy-based approach involving not only the sufferer, but friends and family as well. A therapist that specializes in eating disorders will best be able to help keep the focus on the factors (social, psychological, physiological, etc.) that have contributed to the problem.

The Bottom Line

If you believe that you or someone you love may be suffering from an eating disorder, seek professional help immediately. Eating disorders are dangerous and they do not go away by themselves. Eating disorders will eventually lead to irrevocable damage to the body and its organs, and often to death.

Thanks TG, It is a frustrating thing to watch someone you care about suffer from this... even if it helps just one person, I will be happy. I need to jump over and see what you've been up too - I've been in Los Angeles and I haven't had time to keep up much... should be fun. :)

Hi there, Linda -- The photo on top, gosh, I can barely look at it! I suppose, among all eating disorders, the one that really throws me the most is anorexia. I just can't get how the point of letting oneself die of hunger can be reached, but then it's very sick people that reach that point, thankfully many others can be assisted and treated.

When it comes to eating disorders, I tend to think it's a sick world we live in, so many who don't have a piece of bread to eat and others that will vomit what they eat not to put weight on. Honestly, I think eating disorders are one of the true crocked things in western (developed) countries.

Kudos to you!

Thank you, Elena! I agree. Living in the land of excess can cause us to become de-sensitized to the shocking realities of the bigger world that we live in. Most of us have never had to focus on where the next meal is coming from or where we will sleep that we won't freeze to death. The perspective is probably very different from that vantage point. The distance between survival and over-achieving is long for sure.

Hi Linda,

My hubbys daughter is almost 11 and she is aware of these eating disorders, even has friends who do the purging. I keep trying to steer her right and after reading this I will try even harder. Timely hub with all the resolutions front and center :) Holly

Hi Holly, Thanks for taking the time to stopy by and comment. As you know, there are so many challenges for young women.. actually, women young or old! I am happy that your step-daughter has a woman with a sensible head on her shoulders to discuss this with. Best, Linda

Hi CC! Agreed, and thanks for stopping in. It is heartbreaking and scary for sure. The challenge for these folks is not an easy one because they really do see something very different in the mirror than what is really there... it is a long tough recovery.

Thank you for sharing this informative hub. I can only concur with all the other readers. It is a terrible worry for all concerned, and their families.

Hi D.A.L., Thanks for reading and commenting. Your concern for the families is nice. They often get overlooked in this...

It is certainly worrying to have these eating trends. But do they, do you think, represent something more worrying - a growing neurosis over our modern (and in historic terms)artificial lifestyle?

Nicks, Thank you for your thoughtful question. And, to answer your question, yes, I do. The statistics tend to support that--with, of course, the obligatory exceptions to every good statistic. When I began to really think about this, it unravelled into so many corollaries that I really had to rein myself in to keep it focussed. So I gave your supposition a conceptual wink and a nod, but forced myself to move on so as not to loose focus of my primary goal in writing it... But, one could, I believe, definitely make a case against artificial lifestyle as a major culprit.

I've always heard about this disorder, and I've always loved food. I actually know a couple people who have had eating disorders, and if what it takes to be liked is to be super skinny ill stick with my health

Hi ASElle, It sounds like you have a very healthy perspective on things. I noticed from your bio that you are very artistic... you are born with a unique ability to recognize and assess such things as dimension and scale in ways that the rest of us can not. It is my understanding that those that suffer from eating disorders, particularly anorexics, really have to fight perception; what they see in the mirror does not match reality. I really liked your comment, and welcome to hubpages. I hope to see more from you. Best, Linda
