The Wedding Cake Top
The wedding cake topper is a lasting reminder of the couple's wedding celebration.
Long after the day is over and the thank-yous have been sent, the cake topper will continue to evoke memories of the love, joy, and laughter that was shared on the couple's wedding day.
The wedding ceremony will develop a personality as individual as the couple. Some couples prefer a traditional wedding, while others will enjoy a less formal event. But, whatever the preference, the cake topper should be representative of the wedding theme.
Some couples are fun-loving and enjoy extending a personal sense of humor into the fabric of their wedding ceremony. There is a great selection of funny wedding cake toppers that can lend a bit of levity to an otherwise serious bit of business.
The tradition of good-natured ribbing is not a new one. Even Socrates himself provided us with one of the most used and humorous wedding quotes of all time. He said of the subject, "By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher."
Of course, the reluctant groom and the sure-footed bride are often prized targets, and there are a number great wedding cake toppers that depict just that scenario.
But there are reluctant brides too. Mae West, one of the nation's most outrageous female entertainers and reluctant brides, is quoted as saying, "Marriage is a great institution, but I'm not ready for an institution."
Not to worry. There are funny wedding cake toppers for everyone.
The Traditional Wedding
Some couples will choose a wedding that follows the traditions of their culture or religion.
In Celtic ceremonies, for example, the couples hands are bound together with a piece of tartan during the exchange of vows to signify that their souls are united. After the vows, the groom pins the piece of tartan to the brides dress at the shoulder to signify that she is now part of his family. The Claddaugh ring (like the one on the cake topper to the right) is often worn as a wedding ring as it is a symbol of love.
The Chinese ceremony will use a a lot of red as it signifies love, prosperity and joy in the Chinese culture. The bridal gown is usually red, as are the wedding invitations, gift boxes, etc. Even the homes of the bride and groom are decorated in red on the day of the ceremony.
The Hindu marriage actually consists of more than one ceremony. During the phase known as Saptapadi, the couple completes seven encirclements around 'The Sacred Fire,' which is representative of the fire-deity known as Agni. Agni is considered the main witness to the vows the couple makes with each circuit around the fire.
The First Dance
The First Dance, or the Wedding Waltz, has long been a wedding tradition. It is the couple's first dance as husband and wife.
Some couples select a traditional waltz like, Blue Danube, because it lends itself nicely to the 'box step,'--a dance that is much appreciated by both an awkward and uncomfortable groom, and the bride on whose feet he is not trampling.
In recent years I've seen an amusing trend towards thinking 'outside of the box step.' I've attended weddings where couples have chosen selections ranging from Michael Jackson's, Thriller, to the James Brown classic, I Feel Good.
