Penny Pinching - Save money on utilities, groceries and fashion!
61What Do Buffalo Nickels Have to Do With Penny Pinchers?
Save on Utilities
I hate spending money on utilities.
I also hate being too cold or too hot, so my perspective on great ideas to save money does not include me being bundled up in the dark in a parka. I am constantly looking for new, sensible ways that allow me to maintain a thermostatically pleasant environment without going over the top.
Try some of these cost savings ideas. Some of them may save only pennies a day, but we penny pinchers know that those pennies add up... try amortizing $1 over thirty years!
- Use glass or ceramic cookware in the oven. You can use a temperature that is 25 degrees lower than that called for in the recipe.
- The stove or range top uses less energy than the oven, so cook topside whenever you can.
- Closing off seldom used rooms (so you don't heat them in the winter and cool them in the summer) is a great way of saving energy.
- Vacuum the coils on the bottom or back of your refrigerator. Dust build up on them makes the refrigerator run more often.
- Make sure your refrigerator has plenty of breathing room or it will get too hot and run more.
- Smaller appliances like electric cookers or slow cookers use less energy than the range or oven.
Healthy Quick Vegetarian Tacos - They are Awesome, Inexpensive and Good For You!
Crispy Black Bean Tacos With Feta and Cabbage Slaw
Prep: 25 minutes / Total: 25 minutes
Makes 4
- 1 15 oz can of black beans (drained). I make sure to buy the seasoned beans for extra flavor
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 5 teaspoons olive oil, divided
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
- 2 cups coleslaw mix
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 4 white or yellow corn tortillas
- 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese
- Bottled chipotle hot sauce or other hot sauce (I use mild sauce).
Place beans and cumin in a small bowl; partially mash. Mix 2 teaspoons olive oil and lime juice in medium bowl; add coleslaw, green onions, and cilantro and toss to coat. Season slaw to taste with salt and pepper.
Heat 3 teaspoons olive oil in large nonstick skiller over medium-high heat. Add tortillas in single layer. Spoon 1/4 of bean mixture onto half of each tortialla; cook 1 minute. Fold tacos in half. Cook until gold brown, about 1 minute per side. Fill tacos with feta and slaw. Pass the hot or mild sauce alongside.
Recipe is from Quick dishes for every-night cooking from the Bon Appetit test kitchen.
By the way, I make these on a counter top electric griddle which is easier, and, you guessed it, cheaper.
Saving on Groceries
Saving money on groceries is one of the most rewarding ways to be a penny pincher. Simply by substituting a healthy quick vegetarian taco dinner for more traditional beef tacos, you can eat better and save money. Try these easy tricks for saving money on groceries.
- Always shop the perimeter of the supermarket, and avoid the center aisles are where you will typically find the high priced prepackaged and preprocessed items. The perimeter is where you find the produce, meat, and dairy.
- Make your own substitutes for prepackaged items you buy (ie: hot chocolate mix, spice rubs, etc.) These are usually easy to make and store and cost a fraction of the store prepackaged versions.
- Make your own salad dressings and croutons. These are easy and quick, and will save you at least 50%.
- Load up on loss leaders (the advertised sale items the store uses to bait you in). If it's a perishable item, then buy only as much as you can use. If it's non-perishable, buy the limit.
- Sneak in at least one vegetarian meal made with legumes and grains each week. They are much cheaper and very good. Try the recipe I've included to the right. You will not be disappointed.
- Buy the largest quantity rather than individual portions. Larger quantities are almost always cheaper per unit.
- Shop at thrift bakeries. Most of them have fresh items (fresher than the markets, actually) at discounted prices. Remember, the trick isn't just to save money, but to eat and live well for less.
Buy Fine Jewelery for Fashion Jewelery Prices
Look Like a Million Dollars (While Still Being Frugal)
When most of us think of being frugal, we think of someone who is shabbily dressed, wearing clothing that went out of style three decades ago.
I assure you, this does not have to be the case!
The trick to looking like a million (while still being frugal) is to buy classic (at a huge discount of course!) then take care of what you buy. Remember, the goal is to look fantastic and live great for a fraction of the cost.
- Buy fine jewelery at fashion jewelery prices. Check out the online auction sites where law enforcement agencies like the police departments and sherrifs departments auction off stolen goods. You will not believe the fine jewelery you can buy on these auctions for a small, small fraction of the retail price. Take a look at the 14K topaz ring I purchased as a graduation gift for well under $50.
- Learn to accessorize. Well-chosen accessories can easily give one dress several distinct looks. Determine which colors and lines look good on you, then stay with that. That way you can swap out pieces for yet another look.
- Avoid paying retail! There are so many fashion outlets and sales that it is crazy to pay full retail for anything. Remember not to shop for your garments at the last minute, especially for events like weddings.
Save Money With Homemade Dressings and Homemade Cleaners
- Homemade Cleaners Money Saving Tips for the Home
Lets face it. There are two things on the mind these days: saving money and saving our planet. Using homemade cleaning solutions is a great way to accomplish both at the same time. The fact is that... - How to Make a Vinaigrette Salad Dressing

Gracias, Linda! Been back for a bit, but haven't had much time for playing around here, just one new hub since I came back.
So you also own your power tools, eh? How about a tool belt? They tell me I'm pretty sexy with my tool belt on! Laugh! Anyhow, I just have a bit of a problem with electricity, but even so, lately I'm undertaking pretty much anything, electrical or not. Besides the cash savings, it's a matter of personal satisfaction, isn't it?
Linda-Love your idea of frugal, defining what you will and will not be frugal about. I like the fact that you can still be frugal without comprising the quality of your life.
This hub clearly defines, frugal living, with a healthy balance. Great Hub!

Hi Linda I really like the way you strike the right balance in this hub. Some people can make their lives misery when they do not have to. If some thing I use regularly is on offer and a good deal I buy one for the store cupboard. If I have food that is nearing the end of its 'shelf life' I will use it in the next meal rather than waste it.
Good hub, sound advice, I never heard the saying about the buffalo before so it was good you put the picture here so I could get the idea of it.
Thank you Linda, I read the hub and got to smile for free.
I likes to save a bit of money myself, some good tips there ; )
Hi Linda. Thanks for the great hub and the sound advice. You have some excellent tips here!
Wonderful article! I'll be hanging around!
Great hub. The idea of saving on utilites is good for environment also , I believe. The same with making homemade items also which promote family-bonding as well as saving. Even one generation earlier they used to make a lot of things at home which now we buy readymade. All these tips are very useful. Thanks .

"Try amortizing $1 over thirty years!" Well, when you put it that way, one can't hardly go against the idea, can't they? :-) Good article, Linda. And I still remember another hub of yours (or was it two of them) about "doing it yourself". Now that saves a bunch more than pennies, doesn't it?
